All You Need to Know About FIBC Bulk Bags

August 22, 2025

When it comes to moving and storing large quantities of dry, flowable products, nothing is more efficient or reliable than an FIBC bulk bag. These large, woven polypropylene containers are essential for industrial packaging, helping businesses transport everything from food ingredients to construction materials safely and cost-effectively. As a trusted leader in packaging solutions, Southern Packaging LP provides a wide range of standard and custom industrial bulk bags to meet the unique needs of businesses in a wide range of industries.

What Are FIBC Bulk Bags?

FIBC stands for Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container. In simple terms, these are industrial-sized containers made from woven polypropylene fabric. Designed to be both durable and flexible, they're typically used to store and transport dry, flowable materials like powders, granules, and flakes.

While they may have alternative names like bulk bags, tote bags, or jumbo sacks, they all refer to the same type of container. You might also hear the term “Super Sack,” but it's important to know that this is a brand name for a specific type of FIBC. A standard FIBC bulk bag can hold anywhere from 1,000 to 4,000 pounds, making it an ideal solution for shipping large volumes of material.

How Do FIBCs Work?

The process of using an FIBC is straightforward and efficient. A typical bag has a filling opening at the top and a discharge opening at the bottom. Material is poured into the top, and once full, the bag is sealed and ready for transport. The bags are equipped with four lift loops, which allow them to be easily moved by forklifts or cranes.

Once the bag reaches its destination, the material can be discharged through the bottom spout. This simple design makes FIBCs a cost-effective, space-saving, and highly recyclable solution for a wide range of industries.

Common FIBC Styles and Construction Types

When it comes to construction methods, there are four basic types of FIBC bags

U-Panel Bags

These bags are constructed from a single piece of fabric that forms the bottom and two sides, with two additional pieces sewn in for the other sides. This creates a strong, durable bag with a stable base.

Circular Bags

Circular bags are made from two pieces of fabric, the body tube and the base, which eliminates vertical seams. This design is often considered more resistant to sifting, making it ideal for fine powders.

Four-Panel Bags

Four-panel bags are constructed with four separate fabric panels sewn together to form a square shape, with a separate piece for the bottom. This design holds its square shape well, is highly stable, and great for stacking.

Baffled Bags (Q Bags)

Baffled bags, also known as Q bags, have fabric baffles sewn into the corners. These baffles prevent the bag from bulging, allowing it to maintain a square shape when filled. This feature makes them perfect for stacking, as they save space and improve stability during transport.

Coated vs. Uncoated Bags

Any of the four bulk bags types just discussed can be coated.  Coated bags have a thin layer of polypropylene film laminated to the woven fabric. This coating makes the bag moisture-resistant and helps prevent fine powders from sifting through the seams. Uncoated bags, on the other hand, allow the material inside to breathe and are more suitable for products that don't require protection from moisture.

With or Without PE Film Liners

For additional protection, FIBCs can be fitted with an inner liner made from polyethylene (PE) film. This liner provides an extra barrier against moisture, oxygen, and other contaminants, making it a good choice for products that require a clean, sterile environment.

As a leading FIBC bag supplier, Southern Packaging stocks all these products so you’re sure to find the one you need for your application.  Contact us for help finding the right bag for you.

FIBC Top and Bottom Options

FIBCs come with several top and bottom configuration options to suit a variety of filling and discharging methods.

Top Options for

  • Spout Top: A spout is sewn into the top of the bag, allowing for a controlled, dust-free filling process. This is ideal for dusty materials or products that need to be poured in using a spout or filling machine.
  • Duffle Top: This is a wide, cylindrical top that can be opened and closed like a drawstring bag. It allows for easy and unrestricted filling, making it a great option for materials that can be scooped or dropped into the bag.
  • Open Top: As the name suggests, this bag has an open top with no closing mechanism. It's best used for materials that are manually loaded or don't require protection from the elements during storage.

Bottom Options

  • Discharge Spout: A spout at the bottom of the bag allows for a controlled and clean discharge of the material. This is perfect for products that need to be poured out directly into a smaller container or processing line.
  • Flat Bottom: A flat bottom provides a simple, secure base. It's often used for single-use applications where the bag will be cut open for discharge.
  • Full Open Discharge Bottom: The entire bottom of the bag opens up to allow for a rapid and complete discharge of its contents. Unlike a spout, this style has a large flap that is untied to release all the material at once. This design is ideal for non-free-flowing materials or those that need to be emptied quickly and in a single step.

Loop Styles

  • Corner Seam Loops: These loops are sewn into the corner seams of the bag, providing a secure lifting point.
  • Cross Corner Loops: These are a more popular choice because the loops stand upright on their own, making it easy for a forklift driver to pick up the bag without an assistant.
  • Stevedore Loops: These are an extra lifting strap used to connect two corner loops. They are often used for lifting by a crane or hoist.

Specialized FIBCs

UN Certified Bulk Bags

UN Certified bulk bags are specifically designed and tested to transport hazardous or dangerous materials, including certain chemicals and flammable substances. They must meet rigorous United Nations (UN) standards to ensure safety and compliance during transport.

Food Grade Bulk Bags

Food-grade bulk bags are manufactured in a clean-room facility and are made from FDA-compliant materials. They are used for packaging food ingredients, such as sugar, flour, spices, and other consumable powders, to prevent contamination, reduce spoilage, and maximize shelf life.

Anti-Static Bulk Bags (Types B, C, D)

When handling flammable materials like fine powders or plastic resins, static electricity can be a serious hazard. Anti-static bags are designed to prevent the buildup of static charges, which reduces the risk of explosions or fires.

  • Type B bulk bags: Designed to prevent sparks from propagating through the material.
  • Type C bulk bags: For flammable materials; must be grounded to dissipate static charges.
