How to Measure Poly Bags

February 2, 2022

Lightweight, moisture-resistant, high strength, and cost effective, poly bags are a great option for a variety of industrial and retail applications. But with many different styles and valve options, there are some nuances you need to know in order to get the right-fit bag.

Considerations to Make When Measuring Poly Bags

Start by measuring your product. It's essential to have a complete measurement of your product before you consider what size poly bag you need. The opening of the poly bag should also be considered. If your product has unique dimensions, always make sure the poly bag's opening will be large enough to accommodate these dimensions.

Measuring Poly Bags by Type

Gusset and Depth are the same measurement and used interchangeably.

Height and Length are the same measurement and used interchangeably.

Sideweld/Side-Seal Poly Bag Measurements

Sideweld/Side-Seal Poly Bags are a general purpose, low cost bag that can withstand light to medium duty. These kinds of poly bags are made from folded polyethylene sheeting and are sealed on each side.

While there’s no seam on the bottom of the bag, the bag can have a bottom gusset. Bag handles, punches, holes, hang holes, and thumb notches are easily applied if requested. Bags can be printed, are available on a roll or flat packed, and are only made with FDA-approved materials.

Flat Tube/Tubular Bottom Seal Poly Bag Measurements

Flat Tube/Tubular Bottom Seal Poly Bags are a general purpose bag that can withstand medium to heavy duty. These types of bags are best used for food, pharmaceuticals, mulch, and hazardous waste.

Recommended for watertight and airtight bag seals, this type of bag has no seams on the bag sides, and can have a handle, punches, or holes applied as needed. Bags can be printed, are available on a roll or flat packed, and are only made with FDA-approved materials.

Gusseted Poly Bag Measurements

Gusseted poly bags offer versatility in packaging with options for expanded sides or an expanded bottom that allows for variations in volume of product.

Gusseted poly bags offer stability, stackability, and the capability to contour to various box shapes depending on bag size.

Bag handle, punches, and holes can be applied. Bags can be printed, are available on a roll or flat packed, and are made to FDA & USDA specifications.

SP3Back Seam Poly Bags

Back seam poly bags are made from polyethylene sheeting and are sealed on the back to form a tube with an overlap seal.

Back seam poly bags can be gusseted or non-gusseted and offer consistent sizing for improved performance on automated packaging equipment.

Non-Gussetted: Measured W x L
