For many that are new to using an FIBC, aka bulk bag, tote, or Super Sack™, the 20+ design parameters can be intimidating. At the most basic level, an FIBC is a large woven plastic bag with a top and bottom. The bag is moved from point to point using 4 lift loops attached the corners of the bag. In general, these industrial containers are designed to safely transport 2,000 - 4,000lbs of material. We find that the majority of our new users are most interested in the bulk bag’s top style. The following information is intended to give new or inexperienced users of FIBCs a basic understanding of the most commonly available top styles.
Open Top or “Full” Open Top means that the bag is completely open with no ability to be closed. The product packed will be exposed to the outside elements. Open top bags are generally more economical than Spout Top or Duffle Top bulk bags. An open top bag is not any less strong than bulk bags with a top closure.
What is a Spout Top Bulk Bag?
A Spout Top or Fill Spout is a standard bulk bag feature that includes a top panel and cylinder attached to the upper body of the bag. The filling spout provides for clean and controlled transfer of material from the filling equipment to the bag. After filling, the spout can be tied off with pre-attached ties.
The top panel and spout are made from coated woven polypropylene. Note that these components are not designed to be load bearing. The most common spout size is 14” Diameter x 18” Length. Spouts can be custom designed to meet the requirements of the customer. Spout tops are generally more expensive than open tops but less expensive than duffle tops.
A Duffle Top is a standard bulk bag feature that includes a skirt attached to the upper body of the bag. The duffle top allows the user to enjoy the functionality of an open top bag during filling and the security of a spout top bag for closure. The duffle is tied off using pre-attached ties.
The duffle is made from coated woven polypropylene. Note that a duffle top is not designed to be load bearing. Duffle size (length) varies based on the size of the bag’s base. A wider bag requires a tall enough skirt to properly tie off after filling. Duffles can be custom designed to meet the requirements of the customer. Duffle Top bulk bags are generally more expensive than open top and spout top bulk bags.
