Kraft Paper Air Dunnage Bags

High performance extensible kraft paper is an essential component of a paper air dunnage bag. Paper dunnage bags are constructed of 2, 4, 6, or 8 plies or layers of paper.

Paper provides a high coefficient of friction between the dunnage bag and the palletized product. This enables the bag to “lock the load” in place against the sidewalls of the container or trailer improving overall performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are dunnage bags?

Dunnage bags are load securement materials used to stabilize cargo in transport and prevent product damage. They are constructed of 2, 4, 6, or 8 plys (layers) of paper, designed with an inflatable internal Polyethylene Bladder. Their innovative, yet cost-efficient materials can be used in ISO intermodal transportation such as rail cars, containers, and truck shipments. Other common terms for dunnage bags are: container airbags, woven dunnage bags, air bag packing, container dunnage, or inflatable air bags.

Why are dunnage bags used?

Dunnage bags are more economical and less labor-intensive to use when compared to primitive methods like wood bracing. They are used to restrain and control movement of cargo loads within railcars, trucks, or overseas containers. By filling voids, bracing loads, and absorbing vibrations, dunnage bags can protect cargo from in-transit damage, reducing personnel risk and potential costs associated with damaged goods. Dunnage air bags protect cargo better than any other form of bracing, while being environmentally-friendly, lightweight, and easy to use.

How do dunnage bags work?

Dunnage bags stabilize cargo in transport and prevent product damage by being placed in a void and inflated with air to restrict load shift in transport. Dunnage bags consist of closed chambers made from an elastic film filled with air.  When at rest, only the static load generated by the weight of the package contents bears upon the cushioning. When dynamic loads occur, these are absorbed by compression of the cushion.

The quantity of inflation air may be varied in accordance with the particular properties and requirements of the package contents. Dunnage bags are commercially available in various sizes and designs, ranging from spheres, standard cushions to corner and edge cushioning and tubular cushioning. Almost every type of cargo can be secured with the use of dunnage bags, including break bulk and palletized cargo, coils, barrels, cases, and crates.

How do I determine what size dunnage bag to use?

The correct size and type of dunnage bag is determined by a wide variety of factors such as the weight of the product, the void size, and the transportation mode. Please call us at 817-473-5098 or message our customer service team so that we can provide recommendations catered to your product and shipping needs.

Providing the following information can help us determine the correct size of air dunnage bags needed:

  • Length of the pallets or whatever you are trying to restrain
  • Distance from floor to top of load
  • Size of void between cargo

What type of equipment is necessary to inflate international dunnage bags?

Air dunnage bags can be inflated using the following tools:

  • Air gauge
  • Inflator tool
  • Compressed air from an air compressor

Some tools may be recommended for certain types of dunnage and load bags or different transportation methods. Consulting our customer service team can help define these specifications and ensure proper use.

Can dunnage bags be damaged during filling?

Yes, dunnage bags can burst due to over-inflation, as well as being cold burned. Each dunnage bag contains a label located near the valve indicating suggested pressure, however, correctly following inflation checkpoints will eliminate these issues.

How do I place an order with you?

For new and existing customers we recommend talking to our customer service team at 817-473-5098 or filling out our online general quote form. This will ensure we are providing the correct dunnage bag sizes for your shipping needs, as well as simplifying the ordering process.

What certifications do you have?

Southern Packaging’s air dunnage bags meet ISO 9001 standards and are certified by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). We implement strict quality controls, monitoring testing and implementation protocols for improved safety and satisfaction.

How can dunnage bags be recycled?

All the materials used to manufacture air dunnage bags are recyclable after the valve mechanism is removed.

Can I reuse dunnage bags?

Yes, you can reuse your dunnage bags for all non-rail applications in the USA, however, we can not control how a bag is used, therefore we cannot guarantee how many times it may be used.

Air dunnage bags are priced at a consumable level to help you maintain safety during your shipments and ensure customer satisfaction. If not operated properly when releasing the air, the bag may become punctured, rendering it unusable. Being aware of this process can improve overall satisfaction when implementing reusable bags.

Are Southern Packaging dunnage bags verified by the ARR (Association of American Railroad)?

Southern Packaging’s air dunnage bags meet ISO 9001 standards and are certified by the Association of American Railroads (AAR). We implement strict quality controls, monitoring testing, and implementation protocols for improved safety and satisfaction.
