How Are Super Sacks Manufactured? A Step-by-Step Guide

August 15, 2024

When you need a big, flexible bag to store and transport materials in, you probably want to select the Super Sack®, a flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC). You can use these durable bags to transport building materials, food, gravel, dirt, solid chemicals, fertilizer, and many other industrial materials.

Sourcing an FIBC from a reputable supplier is critical to ensuring bag safety, quality, and performance. That’s where Southern Packaging LP shines. We offer 300+ stock bulk bag SKUs in a range of sizes, styles, and Safe Working Loads.

Now that you’re familiar with the Super Sack name, let’s review its benefits, uses, and the manufacturing process.

What Is a Super Sack?

A Super Sack bulk bag is a large fabric container, made from woven polypropylene, designed for storing and transporting bulk materials.

Many different industries use FIBCs or Super Sacks, including agriculture, food processing, mining, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, plastics, and construction, because of the wide array of benefits they provide, including:

  • Superior packaging-to-product weight ratio
  • Convenience
  • Durability
  • Flexibility
  • Ease of handling
  • Contamination protection
  • Cost-effectiveness

All Super Sacks are equipped with high-strength handles for loading, transporting, and unloading.

Materials Used

Super Sack bulk bags are made from polypropylene, a thermoplastic polymer that is both lightweight and stress-resistant. The bulk bag’s woven design gives industrial Super Sacks superior strength, holding loads up to 5,000 lbs.

Bulk bags can be coated or equipped with a polyethylene liner to protect against product sifting, moisture, and contamination. If you are hauling anything that could be negatively impacted by moisture, a bag with a liner should be considered. It’s important to choose a configuration that best aligns with your use case.

Super Sack height ranges from 15 inches to over 8 feet. Standard bag width ranges between 35” and 48”. Super Sack weight capacities span from a few hundred pounds to over four thousand pounds. Bags are easily stored and transported with a forklift or on pallets.

The FIBC manufacturing process is comprised of six steps:

Step 1: Design and Specifications

The first step in the manufacturing process is design. When you order FIBCs from Southern Packaging LP you may choose from a range of designs, each offering unique size, shape, capacity, and liner features. Our team of friendly experts can help you identify the best type of bag for your loading needs. We can make personalized product recommendations to ensure that your Super Sack bulk bag meets expectations.

Step 2: Material Preparation

After you’ve identified which container you need, the manufacturing process can begin. The Super Sack material is created by extruding and stretching polypropylene resin to form strong, thin threads. These threads are then woven into large sheets of fabric.

All FIBCs sold by Southern Packaging LP are made of fabric that goes through rigorous testing to ensure it meets our strength and durability thresholds. Any defects in the fabric can compromise the integrity of the bags, therefore any material that fails these quality tests is discarded.

Step 3: Cutting and Sewing

Next, the top-quality fabric is cut into the appropriate shapes and sizes based on the design specifications. Precision is key here, as accurate cutting ensures the bag is sized properly.

After cutting, the pieces are sewn together using industrial machines. The sewing process, in particular, represents one of the most critical stages in Super Sack manufacturing. The manufacturing team painstakingly works to ensure consistency and uniformity across the entire bag.

Step 4: Adding Features

Super Sacks may include various features to enhance their functionality. As mentioned earlier, liners provide an extra layer of protection against moisture and contamination. Spouts can be added to the top and bottom of the sack to facilitate easy filling and discharge. A duffle is a common top style that allows the user to completely open and close the top of the bag.

Step 5: Quality Testing

Before a bag leaves the factory, each sack undergoes stringent testing to meet industry standards. Everything from fabric strength to seam integrity and load capacity are checked. When you receive your Southern Packaging FIBCs, you can rest easy knowing they will perform as designed.

Step 6: Packaging and Shipping

Finally, your bags are prepared for shipment. The team carefully folds the sacks and packages them to simplify transit. Once your bags arrive, all you’ll need to do is simply remove the external packaging, unfold the sacks, and start loading them.
